Mission Statement

Learning In Style (LIS) is a non-profit education ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Paul Province, commited to providing quality English language education for adult immigrants in Whittier and surrounding South Minneapolis neighborhoods. Our mission is to provide a community of support to adults in achieving their educational goals, and the tools necessary for our students to become independent life-long learners.

History

In some ways, we have changed over the years:

  • We began with 37 students. Now we average 200 per year.
  • In our first year, there were four teachers. Today we have a staff of 24.
  • Early on, we conducted one-to-one tutoring. Today we teach small groups sitting around tables.

In important ways, we have not changed:

  • Our students gain the confidence and language skills needed to adapt to their new culture.
  • Our staff is comprised of competent and experienced teachers.
  • Most of our services and materials are free to our students.
